Numerous historical accounts and references indicate that
ancient Egyptian chefs were the first to introduce falafel. The earliest
depictions of falafel can be found on the engravings and murals of ancient
Egyptians, along with their method of preparing fava beans and adding vegetables.
CNN has published a report on the history of falafel and its
naming. According to this narrative, it is attributed to the Egyptian Copts.
They passed down “Pharaoh’s discs” and prepared them as an alternative food to
meat during periods of fasting about 1,000 years ago. Falafel is rich in
plant-based protein, and it is suggested that the name comes from a Coptic word
with three syllables: (fa-la-fel), meaning “a lot of fava beans
